Breaking News: Taiwan Elects First Ever Female President !

Tsai Ing-Wen

Taiwan now have her first ever female president after Pro-independence candidate Tsai Ing-wen won Taiwan's presidential elections after chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), Eric Chu, conceded defeat.

The Tsai of Taiwan's main opposition party looked destined for a landslide election victory on Saturday as the polls revealed, as voters turn their backs on closer ties with China.

In her first press conference as the elected president, she said:

"We will work towards maintaining the status quo for peace and stability across the Taiwan strait in order to bring the greatest benefits and well-being to the Taiwanese people,"

"I also want to emphasise that both of sides of the strait have a responsibility to find a mutually acceptable means of interactions that are based on dignity and reciprocity. We must ensure that no provocation or accidents take place," she added.

The implication of the election result as rumoured might be a severed Taiwan-China tie as she is a pro-independence candidate !
